Four Different Ways to Get Curls on Short Hair

As someone who has gone through a dramatic chop before, I know that figuring out how to style your hair once it's all cut off can be intimidating. It took weeks of experimenting with different hair styles, products, and tools to figure out my routine. Curling, in particular, seemed more difficult to get right because there was less hair to work with. If you're finding yourself amidst a similar struggle, look no further than these brilliant YouTube tutorials for four different ways (and all the products you need) to get curls on short hair.

Curls with a flatiron

Hair vlogger Milabu proves that you don't even need a curling iron to get curls. She masterfully shows how to use a flatiron to twist and pull strands into achieve piecey, perfect waves.

Best tip: Alternate the direction you're twisting hair with your flatiron on every piece. This will make your texture look more lived-in.

Curls with a curling iron

If you do have a curling iron on hand and want to use it, Kristina Aranilla gets really detailed in this video not only about technique, but also the best tips for prepping hair and finishing it so it looks as effortless as possible.

Best tip: Leave out an inch at the ends from the barrel. The straight ends mixed with curls make the hairstyle appear less formal and "done" and more natural instead.

Curls with a wand

Dana Alexia caters to girls with natural hair in this easy-to-follow hair and makeup tutorial. She starts out with pressed hair (she uses a flatiron to further flatten the roots) then uses a skinny tapered wand all around for bouncy strands.

Best tip: Finish the look with a wide tooth comb to make the bob more messy and full—not flat.

Curls with no heat

Yes, it is possible to get waves in your hair without using any heat. Avoid the damage you get from using hot tools and try this overnight alternative that uses only one styling product. Mia Tyler shows step-by-step how she twists her hair and creates mini buns to wake up with hair that looks like it might've been done with a wand or iron. GENIUS.

Best tip: Secure your mini buns by using scrunchies—not regular elastics—so you don't get that annoying dent in your hair.
