This $12 Drugstore Foundation Always Gets Me Compliments

I have a confession: I'm a foundation snob. My favorite ones tend to be on the prestige end of the spectrum (as in I'm not afraid to shell out $64 for a bottle), but that's only because I hadn't found a drugstore foundation to really win me over. Then, one day I forgot to bring my usual stash of makeup to the gym and decided to try some new products that had recently landed on my desk. One of them was Maybelline's new Superstay Full Coverage Powder Foundation and, I kid you not, three people complimented me that day and told me how good my skin looked. I tested it for a full work day and quickly fell in love. Here's why.

The finish looks like actual skin

The coverage is so natural and undetectable I had people actually asking me what my skincare routine is. And I applied it in a rush, so I didn't even have time to really prime the skin with anything other than my usual SPF moisturizer! Using the circular sponge applicator the compact comes with, I dabbed it all over. At first, it looked powdery, but with the warmth of my skin settled in to give me a filtered, skin-like finish.

It is truly full-coverage—and lightweight

As someone who suffers from an uneven skin tone, I am all about full-coverage foundations. That being said, a lot of them sit really heavy and cake-y on the skin. Maybelline's formula feels like air. Because it isn't so thick, you can layer as sheer or opaque as you want. A little goes a long way.

It's truly matte

I have combination skin that tends to get very oily mid-afternoon on my chin, nose, and forehead. When I first tested this foundation, I applied it around 9AM and did a check-in at 9PM—my skin still looked flawless. I only had to touch up with a setting powder once and the coverage stuck.

It is mess-free

I am guilty of applying my makeup on public transportation, in the backs of cabs, and other less than ideal situations. The key is sticking to products that won't spill all over—and I never have to worry with this pressed powder.

The compact has a built-in mirror.

One less thing to carry in my purse, whether I need to see if I need to touch up or there's something in my teeth. Details matter!

Blueberry Crumb Cake

Bake cake, checking after 30 minutes and tenting with foil only if crumble is getting very dark (some color is fine), until top of cake is firm and a tester inserted into the center comes out clean, 60–70 minutes. Let cake cool in pan, at least 2 hours, then cut into slices in pan.
