As much as I love getting my hair done, I dread every single time I sit in a hair stylist's chair. You see, I'm self conscious about my dry scalp. Dandruff. Flakes. Whatever you call it, it has afflicted me my whole life. I cringe every time a stylist starts brushing out my hair, shameful of the light snowfall that will come from my scalp as soon as they start brushing. I can't escape: If my hair is being styled up, flakes show up right above my ear. If my hair is being styled with a center part, the bits of dust are really obvious against my dark strands. And, while I have tried everything from prescription shampoos to scalp scrubs, the only thing that made a real difference is when I started using a scalp toner.
As it turns out, you should be toning your scalp just like you tone your skin. The one I've grown to love is from Korean haircare and skincare brand Moremo. Here's how I use it: After thoroughly cleansing and conditioning my hair, I spritz the formula directly on my scalp—not the hair—in sections. I massage it in, enjoy the refreshing tingly feeling, and throw up my hair in my favorite Volo microfiber hair towel while I apply makeup. That's it. I've been doing it for three weeks now and noticed a major difference in how healthy my scalp is. It not only visibly reduced flakes, but also got rid of itchiness and irritation.
The toner is created with bio-marine stem cells, plant root extracts, and orange and bergamot essential oils to refresh, moisturize the scalp. It's the solution I never knew I needed, especially given how much hairspray and dry shampoo I use between every wash. I've also noticed my hair looking healthier than ever with more shine and silkiness after using the scalp toner. It makes sense, as David Adams, consultant trichologist (an expert in scalp and hair health) for Thicker Fuller Hair, has told me: "A clean scalp is one of the most important things we can do to ensure we have healthy growing hair."
I will say Moremo's particular scalp toner is hard to find at retailers—I originally discovered it in a K-Beauty hair set from Costco. Thankfully, so many other hair brands are on board scalp toning. Shop a few options below.
